Audio Branding 101

Why not stock music rather than audio branding?

Licensing audio branding tracks from stock music libraries can cost more than you think: you’ll never have ownership of the sound or make it your own, there are many other producers licensing the same audio for their brand, and over time as more brands license the same audio for marketing, each is setting itself up to sound like other brands. Musical trends are constantly changing and listeners tune out due to overexposure. It is risky to align your brand longevity with the quickest, easiest drag-and-drop solution.

What is the difference between audio branding, acoustic branding, sound branding, sonic branding, and sound marketing?

These terms should not mean the same thing in reality, because the concepts are not all identical. However, marketing agencies have used these terms synonymously, and therefore the terms acoustic branding, audio marketing, sound branding, sonic branding, audio identity, sound marketing and others tend to refer to the general idea of audio branding.

How is audio branding different from making background music?

Audio branding is the process of designing a sound architecture that has the distinct characteristics of a brand: it is designed to make a brand’s visible identity audible. Background music provides mere ambience, and is often inflexible and often uniform in color, texture, and tempo.

Is there a formula for audio branding or designing a brand’s sound identity?

We generally follow a formula for interacting with clients throughout our process, which includes research, recommendations, and implementation. But for designing the actual sound identity, this creative process can look very different depending on the brand identity and objectives.

How long does the audio branding process take?

Our audio branding process can be as short as 2 weeks or as long as 12 weeks, depending on the scale of the project. An example of a 2-week project would be sonifying a brand’s logo (i.e., providing a sound logo). An example of a 12-week project would be a combination of several of our services.

How much client work is necessary during the audio branding process?

Enough for us to deeply understand the brand identity and objectives. This will usually entail an initial consultation, a joint listening session, and a final review before revisions and the deliverable are provided. In addition to these three virtual meetings, the client should expect several information requests from us by email over the course of the project.

Can clients request changes to the audio branding designs?

Absolutely. During the time between the joint listening session and deliverable, we work with the client on requested revisions.

What kind of research does Ethosonify do during the audio branding process?

First, we work with the client to gain a deep understanding of the full range of client products and services current and planned; the brand identity and marketing strategy; and primary objectives, including target market. We may further research sound and audio branding practices across competing products and services through competitive analysis and benchmarking.

How do you deliver the final product to clients?

We offer our finalized audio branding deliverable in the form of high-fidelity digital download(s), secured from theft, infringement or other misuse through AES-256 encryption.

Are clients given the rights to the audio brand sounds and full ownership over the audio?

Yes, along with detailed documentation to support your ownership of the audio branding deliverable.

Do you provide marketing strategies for how clients can implement the audio branding and sound identity?

We do provide strategies for marketing and implementing your audible brand and sound identity. Visit our services page to learn more.
